The Sacrament of Holy Communion
Holy Communion is the sacrament in which we receive the Body and Blood of Christ. In the Eucharist, Jesus gives himself to us as food for the journey of faith, drawing us more deeply into his life and uniting us with one another as the Church.
We come together for Holy Mass most days in St Peter’s Church, during which Holy Communion is administered. At Mass we gather as the family of God to hear his Word, to give thanks and to receive Christ who comes to us under the signs of bread and wine.
First Holy Communion
Holy Communion is usually received for the first time when a child is in Year 3 and is able to understand, in an age-appropriate way, what they are receiving. First Holy Communion preparation normally begins in January, ahead of the First Holy Communion Mass in June. If your child does not attend a Catholic school and you would like them to make their First Holy Communion, please contact our parish priest, Fr Benedict, directly.
Home visits
Holy Communion is also taken to those who are sick or housebound and unable to come to Mass. Fr Benedict visits all the sick each Advent and Lent, as well as when their health declines or when a visit is requested. He is assisted by a team of lay ministers, called Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, who bring Holy Communion to the sick at least once a month. If you or a loved one would like to receive Holy Communion at home, please contact Fr Benedict, who will be happy to visit.
